Eco-towns

In 2007 the Government announced that ten eco-towns, containing between 5,000 - 20,000 homes, each would be built in each region. Developments were designed to be zero carbon, contain a range of facilities, including schools, shops and leisure facilities and be an exemplar in at least one environmental technology. Developers were asked to submit proposals for schemes.

Originally there were a number of proposals for the East Midlands including:

  • Pennbury, south east of Leicester (Coop Estates)
  • Newton, south of Nottingham (RAF Newtown, English Partnerships)
  • Cotgrave, south of Nottingham (Crown Golf)
  • Manby and Strubby,Lincolnshire
In the East Midlands all the proposals were opposed by CPRE on grounds of principle and detail.

In July 2009  the previous Government announced the publication of the Planning Policy Statement: eco-towns and supporting documents. The Planning Policy Statement: eco-towns includes the locations which have been assessed as having the potential for an eco-town. None of the East Midlands proposals were included. See CPRE's Press Release on the announcements.
