You can make a difference to your local waterway

Are you boater, a walker or a nature lover? Would you like to make an impact on your local canal or river - and make new friends along the way?

Every year, British Waterways makes an appeal to those who use the nation's waterways, including boaters, walkers, cyclists and commuters, to get closer to nature by taking part in its annual volunteer days.

People interested in making a difference to their local canal or river are invited to join BW's office and maintenance teams in a series of locally co-ordinated events around March time.

Towpath Tidy 2010

Towpath Tidy 2010 is scheduled for 1st to 14th March. Take a look at their list of planned activities around the country and find out how to volunteer.

Towpath Tidy 2009 took place at the end of March. More than 1,700 volunteers joined 635 members of British Waterways' staff in clearing 149 tonnes of litter, painting bridges, locks, fences and graffiti covered walls, and cutting back vegetation.

What will I do at Towpath Tidy?

All sorts of things. You could pull litter out of the canal from a boat, paint lock gates, cut back vegetation or fill a rubbish bag from the towpath. Let the organisers know if you'd like to be kept up to date with developing plans.

Get organised...

If you find there's nothing currently planned for your area, you can contact British Waterways to assist you in organising your own event.

They can supply equipment and materials and help with planning the right levels of supervision. It's really important that you contact them as they may specifically not be doing activities in your area because they have other works planned there.
